AN ORIGINAL CONCEPT BY CLIO VAN DE WALLE
These courses offer participants a totally new experience by working completely in the dark.
Theater in the dark?
As director of actors, I’ve always liked to make the actor work on the lack, the privation of a sense, the visible and the non visible …
How can we play a scene without the voice or the words? without the body? without our partner at our side, or without the notion of time? (I managed many courses taking place during a whole night …)
Each time, this destabilization, or loss of benchmarks has proved to be beneficial and profitable in actor’s work. By working with young blind comedians at The National Institute of Young Blind People in Paris, I have deepened an idea that had fascinated me for years; how do we play if we do not see the space around us?
How do we play in the dark?
Guide to an Organic, sensory and emotional experience.
At first, actors are invited to locate and observe the space in which they will move throughout the duration of the course. (stage, stands, backstage, place where they will store their personal belongings, warning of possible risks – location of furniture, cables, projectors …).
Once the space is «tamed», we turn off the lights and we start gently with adapted exercises;
– Localisation of the bodies and énergies in the space…
– Work on voice, sound, breath, singing …
– Improvisations with music, uses of objects, musical instruments …
– Work on smells, materials, tastes
– Sensory and emotional memories
In a second step, the participants are invited to play the scenes, always in the dark. Having brought a smell, a material or an object that for them corresponds to the scene and the characters they work on, they develop their imagination and learn to «let go» on what they can not control anymore.
They find themselves destabilized in all their gains and acting skills.
The benefits of the workshop
The work in the dark is a fantastic outlet for the release of emotions, the loss or discovery of eventual vocal or physical modesty …
It allows the actor to experiment in a totally organic and instinctive way the approach of a text.
At the end of this dense, rich, and totally new work, he rediscovers himself as an actor.
